In October of 1996, The Rational Mind Theatre Company will present the
world premiere of a new play called NETSEDUCTION. Based on Internet
chat rooms, the play will be performed at ATHEMOO, a text-based
virtual reality set up by the Association for Theatre in Higher
Education.
NETSEDUCTION, by playwright Steve Schrum, is about a small group of
people who meet in a chatroom called, appropriately enough,
NetSeduction. They banter, attempt seductions and fall in love during
the course of the evening, while other visitors drink from the virtual
bar and watch the proceedings.
While there will be a group of actors performing a linear text, there
will be three other groups present: MOObots, programmed as regulars of
the chat room; lurkers, or audience members, who watch the
performance; and supers, who not only watch others but who interact
with the actors and with each other, perhaps having cyberaffairs of
their own.
While anyone with a telnet application can connect to the
performances, we hope to get locations such as INTERNET CAFES
involved, by hosting or "broadcasting" the event--adverstising the
event, and then displaying the proceedings on monitors that many
patrons can watch. We also invite anyone interested in joining us a
super or as a lurker.
