Unfortunately some work came up regarding the ATHE conference so I was
unable to make our meeting. However, here is a suggested schedule for Studio
Z in regards to the Oudeis Project.
Summer 1997 - Dialogue continues
Fall 1997 - Please keep me informed about the Demos. I will be very
interested in how they went and what new discoveries and ideas you will have.
Winter 1998 - At that time I will need to gather information regarding the
project (estimated budget, equipment needs, personnel, etc.). After the demo
I imagine that Oudeis will have a better idea of exactly what full
production will require. I will present this along with documentation of the
demos to the Studio Z board. At that time there will be a decision on
whether the Studio will be one of the RL stages. It will be important for
me to have as much info as is available in order to make a proposal.
IF OUDEIS IS ACCEPTED THEN:
Contact Northwestern University. I will propose a joint production. This
will be critical. If they decline the proposal then I will try a few other
local Universities...if I can't find a co-producer then we won't be able to
be a RL stage :-(
IF UNIVERSITY ACCEPTS THEN:
Spring 1998 - Oudeis Team Chicago will be assembled. Grants will be applied
for and resources will start to be secured.
Summer 1998 - Rehearsals
Fall 1998 - Performances
THOUGHTS
Some things to consider, think about, options:
Management/Artistic:
Guidelines for working relationships may need to be defined or clarified.
EXAMPLE: script changes, artistic decisions- how are they made? who has the
final word?
Publicity coordination and coordinating funding efforts should be considered
and coordinated.
Final production: Unfortunately in my experience (which is not vast)
funding, resources, and project support usually fall short of what you would
like - you don't get everything you want or need. For the Studio's last
project I wanted to integrate music throughout the performance.
Unfortunately, we only got one grant (not the two we hoped for) so we had
to cut back. I had to simplify my original vision. You may encounter the
same problem with Oudeis (I hope not).
Some possible problems:
RL stages= you may not have as many RL stages as planned.
If this is the case you may want to adjust the script or just do a part of
the whole show. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing a piece of a
show. Robert Wilson had to do this for one of his shows. I believe he toured
a part of his show (this part was called "THE KNEE PLAYS") for a long time
until he finally got funding to do his entire project.
Technical support and supplies=you may not get all the equipment you need.
In this case you'll have to decide what is most important and what you can
do without. Discussion of this has already taken place and I believe Rainer
already identified the surf stations in the lobby as a nice extra but not a
necessary technical element of Oudeis. You may have to make a list of the
most important equipment. It may end up that the project will highlight
primarily ONE new technology or one technical element and that's it -
hopefully not, but it could happen.
Will be in touch,
Dan
