The pre-Helenes, or Pelasgians, knew Athene as the goddess born beside
Lake Tritonis in Libya where she was found and nurtured by the three
nymphs of Libya, who dress in goat-skins. This was long before Zeus
adopted her. Her aegis is a magical goat-skin bag containing a serpent
and protected by a Gorgon mask. Her virgin priestesses engaged every
year in armed combat for the position of High-priestess. As a girl,
Athene killed her playmate, Pallas by accident, while they were engaged
in friendly combat with spear and shield. The name Pallas Athene
betokens her grief. As a girl, she was tutored by Alalcomeneus, the
first human borne by Earth, by Lake Copais in Boeotia, before even the
moon was. She and Poseidon have a long-standing conflict concerning the
city of Athens.
