THE VRML DREAM PROJECT ANNOUNCES PERFORMANCE DATES
FOR THEIR INTERNET VR PRODUCTION OF
A MIDSUMMERS NIGHT'S DREAM
The VRML Dream Project is pleased to announce the performance dates
for VRML Dream. Anopen rehearsal for schools and universities will
be broadcast via the Internet on Thursday, 23 April 1998 at 12:30 PM
EDT. The actual performance will be broadcast on Sunday, 26 April
1998 at 1:00 PM EDT and will last approximately one-half hour. Both
the open rehearsal and the performance will be followed by an IRC
chat where people can ask the project coordinators and the actors
about the production.
VRML Dream is a VRML-based theatre production of Shakespeare's A
Midsummer Night's Dream. The goal of this project is to broadcast a
"live" production of the play over the Internet. The play's
characters, sets and props are constructed using VRML 2.0. The
characters' avatars will be controlled by "puppeteers" working on
computers, and their voices will be performed live by actors. Because
we are interested in the broadcast element of this medium, the
audience will be able to watch the play from a variety of viewpoints,
including a director's viewpoint that changes position in much the
same way that a movie or television production controls the camera
angle.
People who wish to watch the production live will need a Web
browser with a VRML plug-in and an RTP player. We have tested the
VRML Dream system on a variety of configurations, and have found that
it works with the following:
* Netscape 4.x and the Cosmo Player 2.0
* Internet Explorer and the Worldview Player 2.1
VRML Dream is also using RTP and GSM compression to stream the audio
for the performance. In order to hear the actors, one will need an
RTP player that can handle GSM compression. The VRML Dream project
recommends people use the Speak Freely player for this purpose. The
Windows version is available at
http://www.fourmilab.ch/speakfree/windows/. A Unix version can be
found at http://www.fourmilab.ch/speakfree/unix/. The Windows
version is also available at
http://www.shoc.com/vrmldream/downloads/speakfb.zip.
The IRC chats following the open rehearsal and the performance will
be held on Dalnet in a chat room called vrmldream. A number of IRC
programs are available including mIRC for Windows
(http://www.mirc.co.uk). Further details about setting up your
computer to watch the performance is available at the VRML Dream main
web page (http://www.shoc.com/vrmldream/main.html).
